Assessment of substances or products, materials and objects with consideration to behavior patterns

According to guideline 2008/120/EC on minimum requirements for protection of pigs, implemented in the national "Tierschutz-Nutztierhaltungsverordnung (TierSchNutztV), the supply of manipulable material for pigs is prescribed by law in the European Union. Every pig for breeding and fattening purposes must have permanent access to safe and sufficient manipulable material. The offered materials should be able to examine, move and change by the animals. The requirements on such materials are not in agreement with economic, ethical and safety aspects. The legal requirements are not specific to select a suitable material. Especially the criterion of health safety should be evaluated with regard to a high extent of product safety.
