Most of the focus on Asian downstream capacity construction revolves around large consuming nations, such as China and India. This is certainly justified. China and India account for over half of all active projects in the region. Just as China has seen unprecedented growth over the past decade, India is emerging as the world's new oil demand center. As detailed in June's HP Business Trends, India has more than tripled its refining capacity over the past two decades, from 1.2 MMbpd in 1998 to over 4.6 MMbpd. According to India's 12th and 13th Five-Year Plans, domestic refining capacity is expected to reach approximately 366 MMtpy, or just over 6.7 MMbpd, by the early 2020s.
