Countries worldwide are implementing emission reduction programs as a measure to ease the environmental impact of combustible fuels. The U.S. has implemented the Federal Clean Air Act Amendments, the European Auto Oil Programs regulate Europe and Japan Clean Air Program regulates Japan. Numerous other countries have similar, but typically less aggressive plans in place or in preparation. One common target is sulfur reduction, mainly in the form of sulfur dioxide (SO_2). Decreasing the sulfur content in fuels lowers SO_2 emissions and reduces catalytic converter poisoning. This increases a vehicle's pollution control efficiency, thus reducing other pollutants.
