Chemical formulas can offer many ways to develop a certain product, and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) derived from vinyl chloride monomer (VCM) is no exception. KBRhas formed an alliance to sell the exclusive license for JNC Corp.'s PVC process technology, which it inherited from CHISSO Corp.'s business, a pioneer in the Japanese chemical industry. The entire control process can be automated to facilitate the process, reducing operational cost. "This process is an efficient use of materials and space," said Francis Tsang, KBR's senior technology manager for organic compounds. Instead of hot water, the dryer design uses steam for heating, resulting in lower energy consumption with the heat exchange. Capital investment is reduced, the company said, because of the smaller size of the dryer, andJNC/KBR offers an automated distributed control system to ensure operations are stable and safe with a reduction in labor requirements.
