There are many questions in the minds of engineers working to meet new safety standards like ANSI/ISA S84.01 and IEC 61508. One question that I have heard quite a bit lately relates to the issue of separating controllers used for safety and control. It has long been the practice of many companies to keep controllers used for safety protection completely independent of those used for automatic control and optimization. Two completely different systems are required. Some companies even go so for as to require different manufacturers.
