Port Waratah Coal Services has announced the commencement of work-on its-groundbreaking 1 70 million dollars Kooraaang Island expansion program, which will enhance and secure Newcastle's status as the world's biggest coal export handler. The expansion will enable Hunter coal exports to rise from the current capacity rate of 89 million tonnes per annum to 102 million tonnes per annum by the final quarter of 2007. New South Wales Ports Minister Eric Roozendaal oversaw the signing of engineering contracts at a formal ceremony on Kooragang Island, and turned the projects first sod, marking the start of the intensive two year development. The expansion - on land adjacent to PWCS's existing operations - includes the construction of an additional stockpile area, a new stacking machine and conveying equipment that will speed up loading operations. PWCS also announced that global engineering and construction company Bechtel Group Inc has been appointed to deliver the project.
