Advanced process control (APC) offers solutions to use full catalyst regenerator capacity safely and to generate substantial benefits. Significant yield increases and operating cost reductions can be delivered through a successful APC installation. In this case history the process knowledge and technical know-how of a technology provider formed a solid foundation for an APC application to the continuous catalyst regeneration (CCR) processes such as reforming and C5 isomerization at Sasol's Secunda facility. In this application; two novel patented methods were applied: the APC philosophy applied to coke-rate control and the development of dynamic models from automatically generated step-test data.
