Two of the leading causes of user concern regarding control-valve performance may surprise you. Field experience shows that the biggest contributor to control-valve maladies is often oversiz-ing. It is a classic example of having too many cooks in the kitchen. Each of the engineers contributing to the final process specification adds what he or she believes is a constructive safety factor, and the resulting installed product is substantially oversized for the application. However, the focus of this article is what may be the second-leading cause of concerns: shutoff performance that does not meet the end user's expectations.
