Lob's Wood, for all its variety, had a dominant main theme: natural abundance, expressed by the massed planting of flowering plants across the forest floor. Carl Krippendorf's greatest achievement as a gardener was to articulate this theme not once but several times through the year, thus providing nearly continuous bloom. It was a plantsman's triumph to have discovered a set of plants that would thrive in the same conditions, coexist in the same ground, and give a succession of spectacular bloom. The principal plants were four in number - daffodils, sweet rocket, a lycoris and colchicums - and as far as I know this was an entirely original combination. Certainly no one had grown these four plants on such a scale before, and it was a grand scheme that unified the garden and the garden year.
