Chujuc is a Western shipper melon with dense netting that was developed in Texas, USA, from a cross of TAM Uvalde and a single F3 selection out of Cruiser. This cultivar was grown during the spring/summer months in replicated field plots at Weslaco, Edinburg, Amarillo and Uvalde. Vines of Chujuc demonstrated exceptional vigour compared with commercial hybrids Primo and Caravelle. Powdery mildew (Podosphaera xanthii) and vine decline were not detected on plants at these locations. Yields at all locations were similar to, and in some cases higher than, the yields of commercial control hybrids. Chujuc appears to be well-suited to semiarid, semitropical and desert production regions such as south and west Texas and New Mexico. The fruit of Chujuc are round and densely netted with a small, dry abscission scar. Interior quality is excellent with deep orange flesh, closed seed cavity, and high contents of soluble solids and beta -carotene. In replicated trials in Weslaco and Uvalde, Chujuc exhibited intermediate resistance to vine decline diseases caused by Monosporascus cannonballus and Macrophomina phaseolina. During the spring of 2007 at Weslaco under severe powdery mildew infestation, Chujuc and Uvalde demonstrated the highest levels of resistance to the disease.
