Greener Victoria

This month will see work begin in earnest on transforming one of London's key transport hubs and business districts into a greener, more biodiverse and environmentally-sensitive destination. As any commuter travelling through Victoria will know, the station suffers significant flooding with surface run-off water from surrounding buildings frequently causing closures on the Underground and undoubtedly the root of major productivity losses for local businesses. In 2010, Victoria Business Improvement District (BID) carried out a green infrastructure audit to explore flood attenuation measures as well as climate adaptation and biodiversity enhancement. It identified a host of potential sites in the zone that would lend themselves to retrofitting with green roofs, living walls and rain gardens among other possible green enhancements such as tree planting.
