Getting paid to go abroad sounds like a pretty tempting idea. And it's not the stuff of fantasies, as this is exactly what a bursary can offer you. Extending your education doesn't have to take the traditional form of a Bachelor's or Master's degree and a bursary can offer a far more interesting option (and one far less damaging to your bank balance). Some, such as the Merlin Trust, have age limits or are only available to students, but others don't have such criteria, and most horticulturists should be able to find a bursary to suit. In the past, bursaries ranging from a few hundred to a few thousand pounds have helped fund everything from plant-hunting trips to garden tours in Italy and Cornwall and studying and cultivating medicinal plants in South Africa.
