摘要

As the big freeze starts to fade, minds are now focusing on potential salt damage to trees. As the coldest January for 23 years extends into February, tree managers are not so concerned with the effects of the weather but with the amount of salt usedon roads and pavements. By one estimate, local authorities and the Highways Agency got through 60,000 tonnes of salt a day during the height of the cold spell and inevitably some of that will have ended up on the trunks and in the root zones of trees.
