The delicate, nodding flowerheads of Gaura create most impact when planted in bold drifts. They also grow well in containers and can be interspersed with other flowers in more naturalistic schemes. The genus Gaura (from the Greek "gauros" meaning superb) belongs to the same family as evening primrose and willowherbs. It comes from North America's dry plains and prairies, with its centre of diversity in Texas. Gaura is a small genus of 21 species, mostly consisting of night-blooming, moth-pollinated annuals and perennials. G. Iind-heimeri named after German botanist Ferdinand Lindheimer, is one of two species that flowers in the morning. This hardy, clumpforming perennial with numerous slender stems that reach 1.5m is also the parent of all available cultivars, many of a more compact nature, with the smallest about 40cm.
