Steel scrap is one of the main raw-materials used for steelmaking. The utilization of sc rap has various advantages, including the fact that it is metallic iron not requiring reduction which is necessary in the case of producing metals from ores and its use allows the liquidation of accumulating scrap deposits. Moreover scrap is often located nearer to the steel plants than iron ores are. The article presents various aspects of scrap supply considering so called steel saturation occurring in some countries. Problems of scrap using in steelworks, factors affecting the scrap consumption under different economic and geographical conditions, and advantages as result of scrap use in steelmaking technologies from the point of view of carbon dioxide emission are discussed.
