Incremental energy die practices for the manufacture of steel products

It is common to find different methods to determine percent reduction per die for a die practice among manufacturing plants, even in the same industry. For example, dry drawing machines generally use tapered reduction practices developed by trial and error while wet drawing machines generally utilize eaual reduction practices determined by the machine design. This paper will review dry drawing die practices (historically developed through trial and error using temperature measurement of wire during drawing) and wet drawing practices. A simple Incremental Energy approach to determine drafting practices will be reviewed. The Incremental Energy approach can be used to help determine an adeauate die practice for steel whether it be Iow carbon, high carbon or other materials and is applicable to both dry and wet drawing. The Incremental Energy approach should be considered when designing machines for all dry drawing practices and wet drawing practices for ultra high tensile strength steels for steel tire cord.
