Publish or perish: how to secure your first publication

With the advent of Modernising Medical Careers (MMC) and the piloting of the medical training application service (MTAS) already upon us, there has never been such pressure for junior doctors to 'tick all the boxes' when filling out the all important online form. Every word potentially carries a score, and with the punishing 150-word limit to every answer, every word does truly count. With one or two points making the difference between being shortlisted for an interview and leafing through BMJ Careers for opportunities abroad, it is more important than ever for juniors to grasp the nettle that has traditionally been the preserve of more experienced doctors, and get published (Williams, 2006).
