摘要

Much has been made of the current inability to increase the pace of discovery and documentation of the rich pageant of life on this planet [1]. One of the most contentious issues is whether new publishing practices, especially utilization of web-based knowledge repositories and publishing platforms, are panacea, placebo, or anathema (2 and 3 in support; 4 and 5 against). In a recent TREE article [6], we posited that the pace of discovery and documentation could be increased by changing the current practice of publishing data and species hypotheses. In particular, we argued that immediate, online publication of ‘quantum contributions’ (any hypothesis or piece of data pertaining to species discovery, delimitation, or documentation) would hasten the collective ability to document biodiversity.
