Genetic resources of kiwifruit: domestication and breeding.

This review describes genetic diversity within the genus Actinidia and discusses the processes by which kiwifruits are domesticated, a classic example of the exploitation of wild germplasm resources. Notes on the taxonomy, geographical distribution, evolution, variations in fruit characteristics, gender and ploidy, and molecular heterozygosity of Actinidia species, are provided.
