In recent years the construction of Vinex developments has made shovels and excavators a familiar sight as they shift mountains of sand to lay the foundations for new homes, often next to motorways. In late 1993, the Government designated 27 areas for building 634,800 new homes by 2005. The scale of the Vinex project is comparable to the massive drive to build new homes after the Second World War.The biggest Vinex development under construction is Leidsche Rijn near Utrecht. Nesting in a strip of land between the busy A2 and A12 motorways, it will contain 30,000 homes, 700,000 square metres of office space, and 280 hectares of industrial land. A further 300 hectares is being designated for parkland and public amenities such as schools and shops. Dozens of architects have worked on Leidsche Rijn to make it varied while keeping its overall cohesion. So far, about 6 percent of the development has been built. Work will intensify in 2002.
