The role of healing modalities (complementary/alternative medicine) in holistic nursing practice.

The call came out of the blue. The woman could be described as a nurse healer, entrepreneur, and activist. She wanted to know what I thought of the need to teach complementary/alternative healing modalities within prelicensure and BSN completion programs. The program in which I teach is endorsed by the American Holistic Nurses Credentialing Corporation, and so she must have thought I would have an informed opinion to offer. This woman was adamant about the need for nurses to graduate with concrete holistic skills and even certifications that would enable them to practice various healing modalities. Otherwise, she said, the educational process means little, because it is populated with coursework that is nonessential and does not truly prepare nurses to be healers. While this perspective seemed extreme, it motivated me to look at the issue more closely.
