Residual stress and distortion are two most common inevitable effects of welding that adversely affect assembly and machining operations during the manufacturing stage as well the performance and safety of welded structure during service. Studies have been carried out to develop effective methods to control residual stress and distortion in complex welded structures. These methods use both analytical and FEM based models. The effectiveness of these models have been validated through elaborate experiments. In this study, the X-ray diffraction and the blind hole drilling techniques have also been established for residual stress measurement and applied to determine the effectiveness of stress reduction methods. In addition, the influence of stress on the Stress corrosion cracking resistance and fatigue behavior of weld joints have also been studied.
