In JUNE and August of this year, the Obama administration announced a major shift in deportation policy. In a policy statement by the President and a memo from the director of ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement), the administration will focus less on deportations for low-risk people and focus more on those who present a criminal or other risk. Low-risk people who are actually in deportation proceedings would not only be able to stay, but they also could receive authorization to work, as well. However, these changes would only apply to people already in deportation proceedings. So, for the dairy industry, the biggest change could be that not much has changed for the group, but quite a bit could change for the affected individual worker.
