Bamboo in the garden: Indocalamus tessellatus

We as bamboo lovers all appreciate the beauty and sense of harmony that even a single small clump of bamboo can lend to a garden. With all the choices of species that can be grown in our temperate climate, it is sometimes difficult to choose the perfect one for a specific location. Indeed there are many possibilities. In the display garden at Grassworks, we have approximately 135 varieties in the ground integrated into an ornamental garden with more waiting to be planted. Our choices can be determined not only by size, but depending on our own personal sense of aesthetic, or culm color variations, leaf size, growth habit, leaf variegation or gradation of color, use and even edibility. With all of these variables to consider, and, often not having the opportunity to view these species as mature specimens within a given garden landscape, making decisions can be difficult.
