Rice Production in the low land ecosystem involves the use of herbicides. Cyanobacteria which are photosynthetic organisms are the most affected since most herbicides interfere with the photosynthetic system. Though butachlor application and cyanobacterial inoculation often go hand in hand in rice cultivation, cyanobacteria show varied response to butachlor (Singh and Vaishampayan, 1978). The beneficial effect of cyanobacteria inoculation on the grain yield of rice has been documented at a number of locations in India (Venkataraman, 1972; Kannaiyan, 1990). However the performance of cyanobacteria is influenced by biotic and abiotic factors. The development of cyanobacterial cultures that are not impaired in activity due to herbicide application isvery much essential. Several herbicide tolerant cyanobacterial cultures were isolated and characterized (Selvakumar et al. 2000). In this study, an attempt was made to find out the response of rice seedlings to inoculation of herbicide tolerant cyanobacteria.
