Effect of teprosyn and zinc on yield and quality parameters of sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.)

Sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) is an important oil seed crop in India. This crop responds to micronutrient specially for zinc. By utilizing more quantities of macronutrients (N, P and K), the deficiency of micronutrients are inevocable. To overcome these deficiencies, application of micronutrients are essential to the plants. Zinc plays an important role in maintaining the quality of sunflower oil as well as yield of the crop by the way of accelerating several enzymatic activities. However, the study of micronutrient effect on sunflower crop is very limited. Soil application of zinc carriers are subjected to leaching loss, seepage loss etc. So the seed treatment of newly formulated chemical namely "Teprosyn" was tested for its effect on the yield and quality parameters of sunflower along with other zinc fertilizers viz. ZnSO_4 and ZnO. A field experiment was conducted during August 1999 to November 1999 under irrigated condition at Agricultural Research Station, Bhavanisagar using sunflower variety Modern as test crop. The soil of the experimental site was red loam (Udic Ustropepts) in texture with the pH of 8.2 and electrical conductivity of 0.129 dS m~(-1). The soil was deficient in DTPA-extractable zinc (0.856 mg kg~(-1)) and had sufficientlevels of other micronutrients (Cu Fe and N). The alkaline KMnO_4 - N, Olsen - P and NH_40AC - K content were 288 kg ha~(-1), 34.7 kg ha~(-1) and 700 kg ha~(-1) respectively. The treatments consisted of seed treatment with teprosyn formulations and zinccarriers (ZnSO_4 and ZnO), soil application, foliar sprayand FYM application @12.5 t ha~(-1). There were two teprosyn formulations, in which, teprosyn F - 2498 formulation contains only zinc and another teprosyn F - 3090 formulation contains both zinc and phosphorus. The recommended doses for seed treatment at 100 percent level was 8 litre per tonne of seed for both the formulations. Randomized block design was employed and each treatment was replicated thrice. Totally there were thirteen treatments. All the treatments received recommended doses of NPK (40:20:20 kg N, P_2O_5 and K_2O ha~(-1)) and other cultural practices were carriea out as per the recommendation.
