Nuclear medicine had its genesis in the field of endocrinology in the 1950s,where the primary task was examination of the thyroid gland with radioiodine(I311).There was no radiochemistry involved because all you needed to do was inhale it,drink it,eat it - whatever route you liked - and in a matter of minutes it was organified and incorporated into your thyroid gland. From the very start, the iodine isotope l3'l served the dual function of indicating iodine metabolism through external measurement of its gamma ray,and today is still the therapy of choice, via its suite of beta emissions, for over-expression of thyroid function and well-differentiated thyroid cancer.
