Récréations et mathématiques mondaines au XVIII~e siècle: le cas de Guyot

Résumé Dans cet article nous étudions l'ouvrage de récréations mathématiques le plus célèbre de la deuxième moitié du 18esiècle: les Nouvelles récréationsde Guyot. Après avoir indiqué qui est l'auteur, un simple postier, et quelles sont les conditions dans lesquelles l'ouvrage a été publié, nous examinons quel est l'esprit qui l'anime et quel est le public visé. Le succès des Nouvelles récréationsillustrent l'essor d'une forme de science mondaine, dont le but principal est d'étonner et d'amuser. Nous examinons ensuite comment les mathématiques s'inscrivent dans ce projet éditorial et analysons les caractères du répertoire des problèmes et des tours. Nous nous intéressons particulièrement aux problèmes de combinatoire proposés par Guyot, comme les anagrammes et surtout les mélanges de cartes, dont la lecture ont inspiré à Monge et à Gergonne de véritables travaux mathématiques. Abstract In this paper, we study the most popular book of recreational mathematics published in the second half of the 18th century: The Nouvelles Récréationsby Guyot. We indicate the motivations of the author, a simple postman, and the conditions which led him to write this book. We describe the spirit of the book and the public at which it aims. The success of the Nouvelles Récréationsillustrates the rise of a science in polite society whose main goal is to amaze and amuse. Then, we examine the place of mathematics in this project and analyze the repertoire of problems and tricks. We focus on problems of combinatorics proposed by Guyot, like anagrams and card shuffles, which inspired some real mathematical work on the part of Monge and Gergonne.
