The date on which I'm writing this column(11 September)is,we are told,the date of a day on which the world changed forever.Aside from sweeping sociopolitical judgments,as more of the detail of that day's tragic events in New York is revealed,we are being reminded oi other long-term consequences.On 9 September,on ABC Radio National's 'Saturday Extra',Geraldine Doogue interviewed Francesca Lyman,who wrote Messages in the Dust for the National Environmental Health Association in 2003(www.neha.org).The incidence of respiratory diseases amongst survivors of 9/11,particularly rescue workers,has prompted a prediction that the final death toll may rise 10 times to 30 000.
