In Victoria the new year is bringing the fluttering sound of chickens coming home to roost in the electricity industry. Complete deregulation of the retail electricity market is due on 13 January 2002. While domestic consumers will be able to choose their supplier (the mind boggles at the complexity of the artificial market system that will allow this) they may not be able to get cheaper prices and may face power cuts if summer finally arrives in Melbourne and raises the demand for air conditioning in advance of the commissioning of the new AGL and Edison Mission Energy gas turbine plants.
