America's health care delivery and financing models are in the throes of major change driven by disruptive public policies and private actions that are roiling the status quo. One such change is the adoption of health information technology (IT), which is enabling providers to move patient data from paper-based to electronic health records (EHRs). A major focus of this variety issue charts their progress, which has been fueled in large part by almost $30 billion in publicly financed incentives authorized by the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act of 2009.
