Deviations from optimum gas-nitrocarburising results can be influenced by prior workpiece surface condition (roughness, contamination, passivation, the effects of cold-working/machining) and by disturbances in the kinetics of furnace-atmosphere reactions. The reasons are discussed in this paper which draws upon practical examples and describes remedial measures. Gaseous nitrecarburising is - next to gaseous carburising -the most widely-used thermochemical process today. However, despite the broad acceptance/utilisation and the reproducibly- controlled process parameters, sometimes deviations from the desired treatment results are experienced. Therefore, it is important to look at the possible causes and influences of these disparities.
