I started professional life as a theoretician, looking at the quantum (or wave) mechanics of chemical reactions, but my love of wave mechanics started in a literal way at the age of four, when I started surfing. The photo of me bodysurfing was taken about a decade ago by the Sydney Morning Herald, as part of an article on the 'insane surfing professor'. Indeed, my most widely read piece, amidst 350-odd research papers and two books, has been a non-refereed contribution to a surfing magazine, about the polymer science of the wetsuit polymer neoprene (polychlorobutadiene) and the effects therein of, well, urine!
