Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) as standard in digital pathology

Sir: In the past decade, digitizing technology has made its way rapidly into histopathology. Digital images are well established in teaching and education and are necessary for diagnostic documentation and research. Now, with powerful slide scanners on the market, digital slides can be produced which allow first-class slide examination by virtual microscopy using an image viewer. Applications for digital slides have been discussed comprehensively in a recent review by Al-Janabi et al.
