It is a great honour; to once again represent Northern Ireland in the National Herd of the Year Competition in what has been a very challenging year due to the weather conditions. Never before have we had cattle housed when judging both the local andnational herd competitions. We have fed cattle silage every month of the year for the first time in the history of the farm and with the rise in feed prices now more than ever we see the benefits of the Hereford breed. 2013 marks 60 years from when the first Hereford females arrived at Solitude farm and in that time the herd has had a great deal of success, right from the first Sale Championship in 1958 to the Championships at the Hereford Sale in October 2011. The herd is run on the same principles nowas when it began with the aim to produce bulls that have the attributes sought by our commercial customers. The breed has come a long way and we are constantly striving to improve the quality of our herd without losing any of the positive characteristics of the Hereford breed.
