The world's first piezoelectric fabrics to be produced from poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) and carbon fibre have been developed by researchers at Teijin and Kansai University in Osaka, Japan. The fabrics comprise piezoelectric PLLA fibres and carbon fibres that serve as electrodes. The fabrics have been produced in a variety of weaves for different applications: 1. the plain weave detects bending; 2. the satin weave detects twisting; 3.the twill weave detects shear and three-dimension-al (3D) motion, as well as bending and twisting.
