In this work, we focus attention on important consequences that follow from the existence of the surface of photonic crystals (PCs) and require the energy spectrum of electromagnetic modes of photonic crystals to be considered in the form allowing for the excitation of evanescent modes decaying along the internal normal to the photonic-crystal surface. The nontrivial character of the situation becomes especially distinct under the conditions of multiwave Bragg diffraction (MBD) [1,2] when the spectrum of Bragg reflection of light from a planar interface is formed as a result of resonance light scattering simultaneously on several systems of crystal planes that are not parallel to one another.
