Tony Roscoe of consultancy RyderMarshSharman offered his insights from programmes at major manufacturers about how behavioural safety initiatives can go wrong. His first tip was not to try to influence worker behaviour without the foundation of a sound safety system. "You have to be ready for it," he cautioned. "The general rule of thumb is [to] have all of the traditional things in place: the guarding, the regulations and procedures. If that's all in place and the health and safety manager is banging his head against the wall because they still have accidents, then they're ready."
