Ladders are unlike other work at height equipment; few of us keep fall arrest harnesses for everyday use but almost every workplace and home will have a ladder stored away. This ubiquity can lead to people becoming complacent and is one reason there is a legal requirement for workplace ladders to be inspected. The ladder you are going to check periodically should be the right one for the job in the first place. The HSE recommends workplace ladders conform to British Standard (BS) Class 1 "Industrial" or BS EN 131, ladders for use at work.
