A PLANT hire firm has been given a ?156,000 penalty after a worker was killed operating a tarmac cutter. Stuart Guard died after he was caught in the cutting wheel of a machine designed to remove the top layers of road tarmac. Swindon Crown Court heard that the 28-year-old was sent by Direct Plant Services - trading as South and West Highways Trenching - to a site in Box, Wiltshire, to prepare trenches for new gas pipes.
