Government gives in on tower crane register

THE government is to compile a statutory register of all tower cranes in the UK. The secretary of state for work and pensions, James Purnell, has asked the HSE to set up a compulsory register of tower cranes on construction sites by April 2010. In its inquiry into the work of the HSE last year, the Work and Pensions Select Committee called on the executive to set up a register of major construction plant with details of its ownership and maintenance history. The call followed a series of tower crane accidents, in 2006 and 2007, which prompted a campaign by the construction union UCATT and a Private Member's Bill calling for a register.
