Mine safety - an international issue

In the past month we have seen enforcement action following mining incidents in both the UK and US. On 14 December, UK Coal was ordered to pay a total of ?1.2m following the deaths of four miners at two of their pits. The same week, the US Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) imposed fines of 10.8 million dollars (6.9 million pounds) on Performance Coal Company, a subsidiary of Massey Energy, following the investigation into a fatal explosion in 2010 at a mine in Kentucky.
