Council penalised for death-risk theatre lift--Authority had renewed its own entertainment licence without safety inspections
CARMARTHENSHIRE County Council has been fined 45,000 pounds for a potentially fatal incident in which a teacher plunged 2,5 metres down a theatre lift shaft. The accident happened in May 2007, when drama teacher Gareth Williams was volunteering as stage manager for the Urdd eisteddfod, an annual Welsh youth arts festival, at the Lyric theatre in Carmarthen, Wales. Williams had gone to fetch a chair to use as a marker on centre stage to position a spotlight. In the bright lighting he didn't see the 3m by 1.88m hole in a corner of the stage floor and fell backwards headfirst down the lift shaft. "I took a chair from the side and moved it to help with the lights... that's the last I remember," said Williams in a statement.
