THE HEALTH and Safety Commission (HSC) is considering advising ministers to change the law to introduce safety responsibilities for company directors. At their December meeting, the commissioners overrode a recommendation from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) that guidance on directors duties and enforcement of existing laws would be better than new legal duties. The government asked the HSC to find ways to encourage directors to take a more active role in health and safety, after a recommendation by the Work and Pensions Select Committee, and to report back to ministers by the end of 2004.
