The high street dry cleaning shop is a factory in miniature. It handles some pretty toxic chemicals, uses machinery that performs some sophisticated chemical processes and is visited by a lot of people - the customers - during the course of the working day. Furthermore it is managed and operated by people who are unlikely to have a technological or chemical background. In short, it has the potential for disaster. This video, which is intended as a training aid and a source of information, highlights what can go wrong and how to prevent problems occurring. Presented in an informal way, it takes us through a typical day in the life of the shop manager, a lady called Mina. Initially she is visited by a potential job seeker, Jim, who wants to know what is involved in the dry cleaning process with a view to taking up a job in the trade. Through this we get an escorted tour of the process and see the behind the scenes activities. A narrator explains the intricacies of the main machine and how the fluid is filtered and purified. Mina shows Jim the ancillary activities, which include examination of the clothing, stain removal using a variety of chemicals, ironing and pressing.
