28 000 pound fine for hospital trust after patient deaths

UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL BIRMINGHAM NHS TRUST has been fined 28 000 pounds, plus 2500 pounds costs, after the deaths of 2 elderly patients. In the first incident, Edmund White died following an operation at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham in April 2002. The anaesthetic machine failed during the operation and the Health and Safety Executive has alleged that the machine was inadequately maintained. In the second incident, Rita Langley was killed at the same hospital when she fell 15ft from an insecure window in June 2002.
