HSE launches designing in safety initiative

ELIMINATING OR REDUCING RISK to construction workers through better design is the objective of a new initiative launched by the Health and Safety Executive and its partners, writes Rebecca Bunn. Each year approximately 80 construction workers die and thousands more suffer major injuries due to workplace accidents. Recent research indicates that between 17 percent and 47 percent of these accidents could have been prevented or mitigated had the designers taken different choices or actions before construction work started on site.
