Alfred Nobel in his historical testament purposefully pointed out that the prize in physiology or medicine should be given for a discovery. Being an inventor himself, who obtained more than 350 patents, he understood the special value of a discovery and the wide range of its impact. The discovery that will be discussed in this paper forced scientists to reconsider the classical scheme of evolution of the digestive process from intracellular to extracellular. However, its author, Academician A.M. Ugolev, has not received the Nobel Prize, although he was thrice nominated for this award.
