ASBESTOS can be divided into millions of tiny, often microscopic fibres, which can be breathed deep into the lung, where they can cause lung damage and lead to many serious conditions of the lung, heart and other areas of the body. Here we remind readers of the devastating potential health effects from exposure to asbestos fibres and then look at health and safety legislation, guidance and good practice, which is aimed at reducing the risk of exposure and disease. It is currently estimated that over half a million non-domestic premises have some form of asbestos in them. However, it is now illegal to use asbestos in the construction or refurbishment of premises. Asbestos comes in 3 main types: crocidolite known as blue asbestos amosite known as brown asbestos chrysotile known as white asbestos.
