Russia's main pipelines are susceptible to extremely fast corrosion. The authors of the article relate this fact to the absence of any directives in regulatory documentation to account for currents geomagnetically induced during the operation of electrochemical (cathodic) protection units. It is proposed to use the current and prognostic data about the parameters of heliogeophysical disturbances when choosing technological periods to shutdown online cathodic stations that protect oil and gas pipelines. This would make it possible to reduce several times the rate of external electrochemical corrosion of pipes and to bring their operating life to guide-line values.
